The Biden administration is looking into increasing tariffs on Chinese electric-vehicle exports to improve the U.S.’s clean energy standing, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
The U.S. currently imposes a 25% tariff on electric vehicles coming from China. The Journal reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter, that the Biden administration is discussing raising tariffs on some Chinese goods, which would include EVs.
The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative did not immediately respond to Barron’s request for comment.
President Biden has made several steps during his time in office to increase electric-vehicle usage in the U.S. In August 2021, he announced an initiative to have 50% of all new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030. Then in 2022, the president signed the Inflation Reduction Act into law, which includes tax credits for Americans that buy EVs.
In November, Biden said in a speech to a crowd of United Auto Workers that “China is determined to dominate the electric-vehicle market by using unfair trade practices, but I will not let them. I promise you.”
